Kniha Ve znamení havranů, na jejímž sepsání se podílel sedmičlenný autorský kolektiv, je výsledkem několikaleté soustavné badatelské práce věnované knižní sbírce rodiny Eggenbergů dochované na zámku v Českém Krumlově. Sbírka je unikátním souborem, který pozoruhodně dokumentuje stav knižní kultury 17. a raného 18. století v aristokratickém prostředí střední Evropy. Vyznačuje se žánrovou i jazykovou rozmanitostí: obsahuje více než dva tisíce svazků psaných francouzsky, německy, italsky, španělsky a latinsky. Kniha Ve znamení havranů je druhým publikačním výstupem s tematikou eggenberské sbírky: navazuje na monografii Jitky Radimské Knihovna šlechtičny. Francouzské knihy Marie Ernestiny z Eggenberku na zámku v Českém Krumlově, která zpracovává francouzskojazyčnou část knižního fondu (vydána v sérii Bibliotheca viva v roce 2007). Druhý díl série je věnován zbylým čtyřem jazykovým oddílům sbírky. Kromě kompletního katalogu, který přináší detailní popis současného stavu dochovaných exemplářů včetně deperdit, publikace obsahuje i podrobné analytické stati hodnotící jednotlivé jazykové soubory, a to jak z hlediska historie knižní kultury, tak i z hlediska historie literární; zařazena je i podrobná studie mapující bibliofilské záliby rodiny Eggenbergů. Oba díly série tak představují jedinečný badatelský počin, který svým rozsahem i kvalitou vzdává hold této vzácné kulturní památce.

Written by a team of seven authors, the book Ve znamení havranů (In the Sign of Ravens), is the result of systematic research focused on the Eggenberg family book collection which is preserved at the castle of Český Krumlov. The collection is a unique compilation that perfectly represents the state of the book culture of the 17th and the early 18th centuries in the aristocratic environment of the Central Europe. It is characteristic in its diversity of genres and languages: it contains more than two thousand volumes written in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Latin. The book In the Sign of Ravens is the second published output on the Eggenberg collection: it follows upon the monograph by Jitka Radimská Knihovna šlechtičny. Francouzské knihy Marie Ernestiny z Eggenbergu na zámku v Českém Krumlově (An Aristocrat’s Book Collection. French Books of Maria Ernestina of Eggenberg at the Castle of Český Krumlov) which covers the part of the collection written in French (published in the series Bibliotheca viva in 2007). The second part of the series is dedicated to the other four language sections of the collection. Besides providing the complete catalogue, describing in detail the current condition of the preserved works including deperdits, the publication also comprises a number of detailed analytical treatises evaluating different language compilations, mainly from the perspective of the book culture history but also from the viewpoint of literary history; a detailed study mapping the bibliophile preferences of the Eggenberg family is also included. Both parts of the series represent a unique research that pays tribute, by its extent and quality, to this cultural treasure.
